Do you have to bring your own flashlight ?

Is it a tour or are you on your own?

My wife and I attended the Valentine evening flash light love, lust, & scandal tour believing it had some potential. You would think a tour with such a them would have a reasonable age limit not just for the experience of the viewer but all involved. 16 years of age would be reasonable, maybe 18. Nope, the first question asked was by a 5 year old girl wondering where the mummy. It wasn’t a darling little moment. It in fact reset the theme of the whole tour as the guide now had to cater to the group of youngster and their headlamp wearing guardians. During the entire rushed tour other groups were walking in and out, shining lights in everyone’s faces. I also felt as is we got the cheap seats of the tour. I noticed other child free groups seemed to be slower paced and more in depth. Some groups were picked by random and others were lucky enough to be friends of friends. Some of these short comings could have been avoided but putting a reasonable age limit on such a themed tour on Valentine’s day, and perhaps strongly recommending to the guests to speak softly and avoid shining their light in other patrons eyes. Our tour did the best she could giving the circumstances, one man even tried to start an argument that contemporary art shouldn’t be in the museum. The only saving grace was the parking attendant. He was extremely informative and helpful. The tour however was a total loss in more ways than I can count.

We apologize for your less than satisfying experience with the flashlight tours. I will pass your comments along to our programming people so they can be addressed.

My husband and I lead a Cub Scout troop and were interested in doing a flashlight tour. Will you be holding them again this year?

  12. Stephanie Elton says:

Hello, Melinda! Flashlight tours for 2015 have a bit of a twist this year. TMA is hosting a “Tales of Mystery and Art” program on Friday Oct. 30 from 5 to 9 p.m. and Saturday, Oct. 31 from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. in the Peristyle & Museum Galleries. Visitors will discover tales and mysteries of the Museum in hidden spaces and galleries transformed by music, lights and the spirits of the season. Costumes are encouraged!
