Edgar Degas (French, 1834-1917), Study for Little Dancer Aged Fourteen, bronze, 1919–21 Gallery 35

Today would have been Edgar Degas’s 179th birthday. In honor of the French painter and sculptor, we highlight Toledo’s bronze cast of one of Degas’s wax sculptures. The wax figure was made as a study for the finished Little Dancer which resides in the National Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C. Fourteen-year-old Marie van Goethem, who served as the model, was a ballet dancer from the Paris Opéra where Degas often found inspiration.
