Erwin Redl is a resident artist in TMA’s Guest Artist Pavilion Project (GAPP) and his ethereal work of art, aptly titled Floating, in Silence was installed in the Glass Pavilion earlier this summer. Producing and installing Floating, in Silence required tedious work by Redl and a team of assistants. TMA Associate Director Amy Gilman leads a discussion with Redl and Jeff Mack about the conception and production of Redl’s installation at 7 p.m. September 19 in the GlasSalon.
Perhaps best known for draping the Whitney Museum in red and blue lights for the 2002 Whitney Biennial, Redl typically works with tiny light-emitting diodes mounted in a grid to play with viewers’ perceptions of space and architecture. During the conception and production of Floating, in Silence, Redl started to embrace the medium glass because of its dual identity of being ephemeral and solid at the same time.
Floating, in Silence consists of 381 suspended glass spheres that are exposed to the subtle movements to of the Glass Pavilion courtyard’s air current. Each glass sphere was handcrafted in the Glass Pavilion Hot Shop and is filled with red liquid.
“Somehow the installation has a musical quality,” said Redl. “The spheres become notes. The aircraft cables are strings precisely tuned and aligned. It’s so much about imagining the wind moving the spheres not only visually but also aurally.”
