Wayne Thiebaud (American, born 1920), Roast Beef Dinner (Trucker’s Supper), oil on canvas, 1963. 20 x 24 in. Wolfe Gallery
Beginning as a poster designer, commercial artist, and, briefly, an animator for the Walt Disney Studios, Wayne Thiebaud eventually settled on painting. Starting in the mid-1950s, he focused on painting ordinary and often “blue collar” objects, notably his images of diner foods: hot dogs, pies, ice cream, and hamburgers. Thiebaud painted this typical American truck stop diner meal from memory. It recalls a genuine experience of Americana that has slowly vanished over time.
