Working to balance abstraction and content, fleeting gesture and solid mass, Lynda Benglis explores how to take the painterly gesture of the Abstract Expressionists and translate it into three dimensions. To create Migrating Pedmarks Benglis started with equal-sized rectangles of clay, which she twisted, pierced, and marked in a variety of ways. She then built the actual structure by assembling the separate pieces into one form. The mark of the artist’s hand is literally embedded in the clay through her fingerprints. These potentially fleeting gestures are made permanent when the clay shape is then cast in bronze.
