Edmund Osthaus was born in Hildesheim, Germany. He studied at Düsseldorf Academy and immigrated to America in 1882. He worked in St. Louis and Wisconsin until 1886 when Toledo Blade editor D.R. Locke brought him to Toledo as principal of Toledo Academy of Fine Arts, which Osthaus headed until 1892. Interest in dogs and hunting were an Osthaus tradition, and these subjects became Edmund’s specialty. He often travelled within North America to attend field trials and make sketches and photographs of the dogs.
