Ed Hill, the Toledo-Lucas County Public Library special collections librarian, discusses one of the most important volumes in the Toledo Museum of Art’s rare book collection, a copy of the 1632 Second Folio of “William Shakespeare’s Comedies., Histories and Tragedies,” on view in Gallery 15. Prior to Shakespeare’s death in 1616, only eight of his plays had been printed. Were it not for the printing of the First Folio in 1623 and the Second Folio in 1632, the complete works of Shakespeare would have been lost, making the Folios among the world’s great literary treasures.
