Kehinde Wiley has redefined the art-historical canon, fearlessly drawing attention to the absence of African Americans from historical and cultural narratives with his riffs on paintings by Old Masters. (In his signature portraits, he replaces European aristocrats with contemporary black subjects.) The first museum survey of Wiley’s 14-year career, titled Kehinde Wiley: A New Republic, opens at the Toledo Museum of Art Feb. 10. To celebrate, Wiley will be welcomed to the Peristyle stage on Thursday, Feb. 9 at 6 p.m. for a Masters Series lecture to discuss his work and inspiration. The series is sponsored in part by the TMA Ambassadors.

Admission to the event is free (no ticket required) and a limited number of priority tickets, which include seating in a reserved section and parking, are available for purchase. These tickets are $25 each for Museum members and for $30 each for nonmembers. Priority tickets can be purchased at kehindewiley.eventbrite.com or by phone at 419-255-8000 ext. 7448 during Museum hours.

A preview of the exhibition for TMA members will follow the lecture. To become a member, visit giving.toledomuseum.org/membership.
