Dale Chihuly (American, born 1941), manufactured at Waterford © in 1995, designed and assembled at Toledo Museum of Art in 2006.
In 1996 Dale Chihuly embarked on an ambitious installation of his monumental, multi-piece “chandeliers” throughout the city of Venice, Italy. The Campiello Remer chandelier(named for its installation location) was one of 14 designed for Chihuly Over Venice. In homage to the teamwork of glassmaking, Chihuly and his team of glassblowers created the chandeliers at famous glass factories. Working in collaboration with the factory’s own glassmakers and engravers,Chihuly’s team made Campiello Remer at the Waterford Crystal Factory in Ireland, famous for its fine cut lead crystal ware.
For the Venice installation, the chandelier contained 285 of the pieces created in Ireland and weighed 1,811 pounds. Chihuly subsequently split the chandelier in two, one “half” going to the Kemper Museum in Kansas City, and the other to Toledo. Chihuly’s team installed the chandelier themselves in the Glass Pavilion lobby, rearranging 243 pieces to make it unique to its Toledo location.
Composed of 243 colorless lead glass elements, blown, tooled, cut, ground and polished; assembled on steel armature, painted white; steel cable suspension.
