Buddha

China
Six Dynasties Period, A.D. 220–589

Images of the Buddha were known in China as early as the 2nd century. Originally, they were brought to China from India by missionaries who came across the trade routes to spread the teachings of Buddhism. This Buddha stands on a lotus blossom pedestal, signifying eternal life, with a flame-shaped mandorla or halo behind him decorated with lotuses, honeysuckles and flames. His right hand is raised in the gesture meaning protection for the worshipper, while his extended left hand symbolizes charity.

Gilded bronze, about A.D. 520
