Corinthian-style Helmet

Greek

Metal workers of Corinth are credited with the invention of seamless battle helmets of elegant design, which ingeniously captured the essence of the human face. Corinthian helmets became standard battle attire for hoplite (infantry) warriors throughout Greece. Crests were sometimes added, and images of Greek warriors wearing helmets just like this can be seen on painted Greek vases of the 6th and 5th centuries B.C. (such as TMA’s Amphora by Exekias).

Raised (hammered) bronze, about 500-450 B.C.
Gift of the Anderton Bentley Fund, 1993.46
