St. George and the Dragon

Master FVB.
Flemish, active about 1480–1500

The early printmaker known only as Master FVB for the monogram signed on his 59 known engravings depicts the climatic moment in the medieval story of St. George, when the chivalrous knight slays a dragon and rescues a princess. Master FVB was the first Flemish artist to significantly explore the technique of engraving. He uses a variety of engraved marks to indicate tone, texture, and shading, drawing inspiration from German printmakers, particularly Martin Schongauer (died 1491).

Etching, about 1480-90
