The Dramatic Image: Baroque Prints of the 17th Century

Simon Gribelin (1661–1733) was a silver and watch engraver who worked in London after 1680. He was from a French family long associated with the crafts of engraving and watchmaking. As a reproductive engraver, Gribelin produced two volumes of prints after earlier French designers, including Jean Bérain (see Ornemens Inventez par J. Bérain , p. 48). The prints featured here are, however, based on his own designs. Gribelin’s engraving technique was greatly admired and his prints had a significant influence on the development of printmaking in England.
