The Dead Hare
Etching, 1649
Museum purchase, 1984.31
Wenceslaus Hollar used very fine and densely packed lines to create the fur on his “portrait” of a dead hare. Hollar was particularly noted for his skill in the reproduction of furs, skins, and feathers in his etched images. The hare hangs by one leg as a hunting dog sniffs at its carcass. Song birds lie alongside and fill a basket behind.
