Although recognized as the master of 19th-century wood engraving, Auguste-Louis Lepère was also a virtuoso etcher, producing more than 200 etchings in his lifetime. With Félix-Hilaire Buhot (see nearby), he represents the ‘peintre-graveur’ (painter-engraver) tradition in late 19th-century graphics, imbuing his prints with a distinct painterly quality.
