Peasant in a High Cap, Standing Leaning on a Stick

Etching, 1639
3 1/4 x 1 3/4 in.
The Grace J. Hitchcock Collection, 1981.159

In this print an elderly peasant, or perhaps a friend of Rembrandt’s dressed as an elderly peasant, stands slightly stooped, leaning on a walking stick. His left hand is outstretched, calling attention to something out of sight. Rembrandt is thought to have collected antique clothing and paraphernalia to use as props in his paintings and etchings.
