Storytelling in Miniature

Rembrandt van Rijn
Dutch, 1606–1669

Goldsmith

Etching and drypoint, 1655
3 1/16 x 2 3/16 in.
The Grace J. Hitchcock Collection, 1981.197

In this, his last genre etching, Rembrandt seems to comment on the deep involvement of an artist with his creation. The goldsmith carefully cradles his small sculpture of the personification of Caritas (Latin for charity, or love for all) while working on the base with his hammer and anvil.
