Storytelling in Miniature

Pierre Nolin
French, active 1619–1650

Pendant with Alphabet Surmounted by Two Skulls

Engraving, about 1650
2 1/2 x 2 3/16 in.
William J. Hitchcock Fund in memory of Grace J. Hitchcock, 1990.103

Pierre Nolin has been described as both goldsmith and engraver. He is best known for his heraldic and ornamental prints. This particular design, with an eye for a ribbon or chain and hanging jewels, appears to be for a pendant; however, the prominence of the alphabet suggests a bookplate design.
