Patience

Engraving, 1540
4 3/8 x 2 13/16 in.
Gift of Carl B. Spitzer, 1938.55

Patience is the ability to tolerate or even ignore adversity: the capacity to forebear and remain calm. Sebald Beham depicts Patience as an angel holding a lamb while sitting on a plinth. Behind Patience a demon taunts her, while above, two cherub-like putti (classical figures often signifying the spiritual realm) are about to place a wreath of victory on her head.
