Storytelling in Miniature

Georg Pencz
German, about 1500–1550

Ornament with Satyr and Two Dolphins

1 1/4 x 3 5/8 in.
Gift of an anonymous donor, 1986.14

Like the other Little Masters, Pencz made designs for silversmiths and goldsmiths. In this print he combines a mythological creature—the half-man, half-goat satyr—and a real animal, the dolphin, often given stylized depictions of supernatural attributes.
