Glass Study Gallery: Modern and Contemporary Glass

Dale Chihuly, John Hauberg, and Anne Gould establish Pilchuck Glass Center

1971

Dale Chihuly (American, born 1941), Pilchuck Cylinder. Glass, blown, applied, threaded, and flameworked decoration; applied color, 1984.

Established in 1971 on a former tree farm near Stanwood, Washington, outside Seattle, Pilchuck began as a small summer workshop run by Dale Chihuly and two other instructors. The land was owned by John and Anne Gould Hauberg, who also provided financial support. The summer experiment that started out as a camp eventually became a residential summer school for glassmakers dedicated to a purely individual search for freedom and personal expression in glass.
