Eternally Safe

If his voice could carry
past the bay and
over the bridge,
through the valley and
across the plain,
the city would be safe.
He would go back.
If one could gaze
from the windowsill
of the citadel,
at the cliffs and
toward the horizon,
his shadow would stretch behind.
The evening would be eternal.
