An Original Poetry Writing Competition

TMA’s 2017 Ekphrastic Writing Poetry Contest invites you to submit an original poem inspired by a work of art in the Museum’s collection.

New to Ekphrastic Writing?
Ekphrastic writing, or writing about art, was created by the Greek’s but popularized by the Romans. The goal of ekphrasis was to make the reader or listener envision a work of art as if it were physically present. Looking at art and describing art is central to being visually literate in our image-saturated world.

Educators interested in scheduling an Ekphrastic Writing experience for their students can register online: toledomuseum.org/visit/tours/school-tours

All entries are due March 31, 2017. On May 12, 2017,  the Museum will host a showcase of notable entries and a reception for writers and their guests beginning at 7 p.m. Cash and membership prizes are awarded. Happy writing!
