This event—co-organized by the Toledo Museum of Art and Toledo Opera in conjunction with their upcoming presentation of Douglas Tappin’s I Dream, a modern, R&B opera that recounts the final 36 hours in the remarkable life of the civil rights leader and American icon Martin Luther King Jr.  (http://www.toledoopera.org/events/main/i-dream/ )—features cast members performing excerpts from I Dream in response to works of art in the TMA permanent collection, including paintings by Nicolaus Poussin (Mars and Venus, 1633, about the triumph of love over war), Henry Ossawa Tanner (The Disciples on the Sea, 1910, by the first internationally-renowned African American painter), and Kehinde Wiley (Saint Francis of Paola, 2003, by the artist whose portrait of President Barack Obama was recently unveiled at the National Portrait Gallery).
