Art & Geometry, the first in a new series of Toledo Museum of Art (TMA) professional development workshops for educators, includes an exclusive opportunity to visit Anila Quayyan Agha: Between Light and Shadow and meet the artist before the exhibition opens to the public. The workshop will take place Friday, Oct. 18 from 4 to 6 p.m. The Art &…series workshops also offer educators the opportunity to bring a second educator at no additional charge.

“Learning is more fun and productive with colleagues, so the Toledo Museum of Art wanted to offer a professional development series for both arts and non-arts teachers,” explained Kate Blake, TMA’s assistant director of education. “Art &…provides Toledo-area educators with tools and teaching strategies for cross-curricular and arts-integrated learning.”

Following a tour of the exhibition, participants will explore paper-cutting projects that can be used in the classroom with local artist Mary Gaynier. The session is designed for K-12 art and math teachers.

The next Art &… series is Saturday, Nov. 2 at 1 p.m. and is Art & Music, which will provide Toledo area educators with tools and teaching strategies for pairing musical selections with works for art to deepen student learning.

The session will feature a special presentation and performance with guest artist Lisa Moore. Information on the benefits of using a multisensory approach to learning and demonstrations of classroom writing activities using visual arts and performance will also be included. The session is designed for K-12 art and music educators.

The cost for either workshop is $20, which includes the registration for both teachers and parking.  Participants will receive a certificate of attendance, a visual literacy activity car deck, a teacher resource packet, and two contact hours.

In addition to the Art &….series, the TMA also offers professional development opportunities for early childhood teachers with the ABC’s of Art series.

The ABC’s of Art offers is a series of 1.5 contact hour workshops, which provide Toledo area early childhood educators with tools and teaching strategies to help preschool students’ pre-literacy development through art.

The first workshop is M for Matisse Thursday, Oct. 24 from 5:30 to 7 p.m. This session features ideas for introducing 3-5 year-olds to the work of Henri Matisse, provides tips and tricks for using works of art to introduce Tier 2 vocabulary, and demonstrates an open-ended studio activity that is designed to reinforce learning.

The cost is $15 per teacher and participants receive a certificate of attendance, 1.5 contact hours, teacher resource packet with lesson plans, and a classroom poster.
