FROM THE DIRECTOR

“Seeing comes before words,” John Berger wrote in his book Ways of Seeing.

We take in up to 90 percent of information with our eyes, and 30 percent of our brain cortex is given over to vision. Despite the potential of this dominance in our human physiology, we spend most of our lives dedicated to textual learning with digits and letters.

We do not imagine it is possible to learn Spanish without studying its vocabulary and grammar. Why do we assume we can fully use visual language without being taught its elements and principles?

Addressing this discrepancy has been a prime initiative of the Toledo Museum of Art’s strategic plan since 2010. During fiscal year 2015 (July 1, 2014–June 30, 2015), the Museum took major strides towards its ambitious goal of making visual language training accessible to all.

Conference participants take part in an exercise.

From November 5 to 8, 2014, TMA hosted the International Visual Literacy Association’s (IVLA) 46th annual conference, The Art of Seeing: From Ordinary to Extraordinary, becoming the first art museum to do so. Over the course of four days, hundreds of scholars, artists, researchers, and museum professionals gathered to learn from each other’s work in the field. The results were energizing—not only for facilitating the exchange of ideas among practitioners, but for opening nine keynote lectures to the public for free.

Learning to communicate visually—and understand the visual messages others create—has become an essential skill in an era of ubiquitous photography and image-making shared millions, even billions, of times over. As the guardians of some of the most significant examples of visual communication throughout a millennium and beyond, museums have a unique advantage as they teach this skill to their audiences: context.
It is an advantage the Toledo Museum of Art has leveraged with great success since its founding in 1901, and continues to do as it responds to and develops with the changes of the 21st century.

DO YOU SPEAK VISUAL?

Show, don’t tell, is the new rule of thumb.

Researchers and marketers are becoming keenly aware of this change. As journalist Jessi Hempel wrote in her June 4, 2014 feature for Fortune magazine, “this shift in the nature of communications will have a substantial effect on culture, business, and politics […] those who embrace [it] early have the opportunity to amass influence in their fields and gain power among their peers.”

Acknowledging the reign of images in the 21st century led to one of the Museum’s major strategic initiatives—to make visual language training available and accessible, using its renowned collection as a teaching tool.

Ad Campaign

In fiscal year 2015, this included the public awareness campaign “Do You Speak Visual?” Designed by local creative agency Madhouse, the evocative images and minimal language made an impression, leading to 35,000 visitors to the Museum’s visual literacy websites and to coverage in the Toledo Blade.

The campaign coincided with the International Visual Literacy Association’s arrival in Toledo for the 46th annual conference. Titled The Art of Seeing: From Ordinary to Extraordinary, the symposium brought together researchers, educators, designers, media specialists, artists, academics, and museum professionals to discuss the study and practice of visual literacy from Nov. 5 to 8, 2014.

The Museum also made an impactful series of video interviews on the subject of visual literacy and its connections to critical thinking, creativity, education, technology, and empathy, all of which are available on YouTube. Featured speakers included filmmaker Stephen Apkon, author of The Age of the Image: Redefining Literacy in a World of Screens.

“Empathy very often comes from our eyes,” Apkon noted. “We feel something for something that we see. And there’s no question that having children engaged in telling stories visually and becoming very close observers of the world around them helps develop empathy.”

A NEW LANGUAGE IN THE GALLERIES

A study by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology found that the brain can identify an image in as little as 13 milliseconds. But our rapid-fire recognition must be enhanced by a knowledge and understanding of what we are looking at.
Spending time studying great works of art can help us become better at seeing, an idea that became the thrust of a re-imagined gallery installation in the Museum’s east wing in spring 2015.

Curated by Head of Visitor Engagement Halona Norton-Westbrook and Emma Leah Bippus Director of Education Mike Deetsch, Speaking Visual: Learning the Language of Art asks visitors to look closer at the elements and principles of visual language in practice.

Traditionally, works of art are often hung in relation to the time period or movement they belonged to and labels share historical background and biographical information. In Speaking Visual, labels demand more active interpretation from visitors, and paintings and sculptures are displayed in interesting juxtapositions that show the connections between the visual creations of the past and those of today.

In one corner, for example, works using gold from different centuries and regions are displayed together: a Buddha from 15th-century Tibet; a regal crown of leaves from ancient Greece; a pendant by the Baule people of Côte d’Ivoire; and a gold-ground painting of the Madonna from Renaissance Italy. The label asks viewers to consider the meaning in material: How does each artist express the way gold was regarded in these varying societies? In what ways does gold play a similar role? In what ways is it different?

“By engaging visitors in more active looking experiences, we hope we can enhance their visual interpretation skills,” said Dr. Norton-Westbrook. “The skills they learn in the gallery can enhance the way they see and respond to imagery in their everyday lives.”

CONNECTING ART AND STORYTELLING

Bringing language to life can be challenging for teachers bound to the classroom.

With the Women’s Initiative of United Way’s WordShop program, students from area elementary and middle schools break free from those constraints on unique story writing field trips to the Museum. After a stimulating gallery tour, the high-energy creative process begins, as young writers work together with a guide, illustrator, and typist to create the beginning and middle of the story. Once they’ve reached a climactic point, the students complete their own endings individually.

The aim, according to Program Coordinator Matt Russell, is to allow the visual language in art to inspire more developed written language. “They’re traditionally not given any visual stimulus to base things off of in the classroom,” Mr. Russell said. “We’re able to capitalize on the inspiration they get in the galleries to teach them to paint a mental picture for the readers.”

The Museum’s work with WordShop was featured during the International Visual Literacy Association conference and continued beyond the fiscal year to provide opportunities for area students to become skilled storytellers who understand the full picture of visual and textual communication complementing each other.

RESEARCHING VISUAL LITERACY’S IMPACT

Do toddlers benefit from viewing and talking about art?

That was the question posed by two Toledo Museum of Art pilot studies in fiscal year 2015, which examined whether children from 18 months up to the age of five could gain important pre-literacy language skills from looking at, experiencing, and describing art.

“In Lucas County, kindergarten preparedness is shockingly low—only 33 percent of kids are ready to enter school,” said Assistant Director Adam Levine. “Although we think there are a wide range of benefits to visual literacy, we decided to begin by assessing whether or not pre-literacy skills—especially word acquisition through describing art images—would help improve kindergarten preparedness.”

The results of the research were promising. Though further work needs to be done to confirm the Museum’s findings, initial results show that a multisensory visual literacy curriculum that incorporates visual art and discussion about it provided notable advances in vocabulary skills.

“Exposure to visual literacy teaching techniques enhanced word acquisition skills by a statistically significant margin,” Dr. Levine said. “Students who were exposed to visual language training increased their vocabulary anywhere between four to ten words every two weeks; over the course of the study they increased their vocabulary by 25 words or more on average, an astonishing amount.”

The Museum is working to expand the pilot study and pursue third party data analysis.

“If the results remain strong, as we predict they will,” Dr. Levine said, “We’ll be in a strong position to roll out the curriculum across Toledo Public Schools in the near future.”

A COLLABORATION WITH THAI ARTIST PINAREE SANPITAK

In addition to their work helping visiting artists fulfill their vision, the talented group of glassblowers that comprise the Museum’s production team field a number of requests from area organizations to create glass awards, monuments, and chandeliers.

Their hard work is rarely seen outside the area, so it was a great coup for the team when The Hammock, their work with Guest Artist Pavilion Project (GAPP) resident Pinaree Sanpitak, was featured at Art Basel Hong Kong in May 2015. (The GAPP program invites artists from around the world to create new work in glass.)

Devised by Sanpitak during the fall of 2014, 1,869 glass beads were blown and hand-crafted over 750 hours for three iterations of The Hammock (one of which is on display on the Glass Pavilion grounds).

Sanpitak’s sculpture is a play on a theme she explored through her work Hanging by a Thread, which examined the aftermath of the 2011 flooding crisis in her native Thailand by creating hammocks from a traditional type of Thai textile that was distributed as part of relief efforts.

“She’s a groundbreaking artist with a fascinating point of view,” said Museum Director Brian Kennedy. “It was a delight to be able to collaborate with her.

ART THROUGH LOCALEYES

When Scott Boberg joined the Toledo Museum of Art as manager of programs and audience engagement (he was previously head of interpretative programs at the Detroit Institute of Arts), he was struck by how connected locals were to their early memories of the Museum.

I was new to the city, and whenever I mentioned that I worked at the Museum to anyone in the area, I was always met with a very deep, nostalgic story about a favorite work of art or a first impression,” Boberg said. “That really inspired me, so I wanted to find a way to incorporate it into our programming.”

In the fall of 2014, Boberg debuted Localeyes, a new series of free tours that invites Toledoans to share which works of art in TMA’s collection most inspired them. The experience allows artists, professors, musicians, and other community members to share the Museum’s impact on them with the public.

Localeyes continues to take place most Thursday evenings at 6:30 p.m., and has so far drawn a diverse group of guides, from local artist Yusuf Lateef to Mud Hens Communications Director Andi Roman.

THE MAESTRO RETURNS

The Murano native’s career began at just 12 years old. Seven decades later, artist Lino Tagliapietra—now 81 and showing no signs of slowing a physically demanding work schedule—has become one of the most celebrated figures in the world of glassblowing.

The Maestro, as he is known, returned to the Toledo Museum of Art to create a new work in the Glass Pavilion in front of live audiences from May 2–10, 2015.

The event was Tagliapietra’s second stint as a Guest Artist Pavilion Project resident (the first, in 2006, produced The Dinosaur) and marks a triumphant return to the Hot Shop after illness forced the cancellation of a host of commitments for the glassblower, including a planned March 2014 visit to TMA.

Tagliapietra’s ten-day residency at the Toledo Museum of Art produced many beautiful works, including one that became part of the permanent collection. But more importantly, it deeply inspired the artists and art enthusiasts alike who had the privilege of witnessing a legend in the Hot Shop.

Libbey Endowments

The Museum is forever grateful for its founders, Edward Drummond Libbey and Florence Scott Libbey, for their forethought to establish endowments that continue to help support our exhibitions, programming, art acquisitions, and free admission for all to a world-renowned collection.
