An initial examination undertaken in spring of 2021 revealed that the clock was functional, but not surprisingly had undergone a variety of repairs and restoration work during its 243-year history.  Conservation will take place in two phases, with Phase 1 involving shipping the clock to conservators specializing in historical clocks and mechanical devices (automata) for intensive research and examination to ascertain which mechanical elements are original and which are replacements. Old repairs to the decorative features, such as the finials, gates, bells, and gilt patterned lacquer base, will also be assessed to determine the best course of treatment and begin repair.
