This silver vase has developed a layer of tarnish over time. Tarnish is a darkening of the surface due to oxidation of the metal. The darkening can include a “rainbowing effect," which drastically changes the appearance of the artwork. The tarnish will need to be removed with appropriate cleaning solutions. Once all tarnish is removed, the silver will be lacquered to prevent the tarnish from reforming. Generally, museum grade silver lacquers prevent tarnish formation for 10 to 12 years.
