AIA-Toledo Society Online Lecture - Andrea Gardner, “Perspectives on Antiquities Collection and Repatriation: Case Studies from the Toledo Museum of Art and Beyond”
Repatriation of cultural property in general, and of antiquities in particular, has become a popular topic. Several news headlines in the past few years have featured stories of museums giving back artifacts to their countries of origin. This lecture will highlight some of the most famous cases of antiquities repatriations in the United States, including some cases that have featured the Toledo Museum of Art. The lecture will explore the issues of these cases in depth to provide fuller context for how museums are now navigating this difficult terrain of collecting ancient art. This lecture is presented by the Archaeological Institute of America—Toledo Society, Toledo Museum of Art, and the University of Toledo.
All lectures are illustrated, non-technical, and free and open to the public. They will be offered online live using Cisco Webex webinar software provided through the University of Toledo. Prior to each lecture a web link will be posted on the Toledo Society’s website (http://www.eeescience.utoledo.edu/toledo_society/) and to view a lecture it is only necessary to click on this link. Lectures will be viewable on all devices, including smart phones, tablets, and laptop and desktop computers. Viewers will have an opportunity to ask the speaker questions after the presentation.
